Head-on Collisions

Experienced Attorneys Litigate Head-on Collisions in Louisville, KY

Aggressive representation for catastrophic injuries from high-speed accidents

Head-on collisions are among the deadliest types of motor vehicle crashes, because the force of one vehicle is added directly to force of the other. Head-on collisions are relatively rare, accounting for only about two percent of all crashes, but they account for more than 10 percent of all traffic fatalities. If you’ve been the victim of a head-on collision, your injuries are probably substantial, so you should only trust your case to an accident attorney with experience in catastrophic injury cases. Drawing on more than 25 years of combined legal experience, the attorneys of the Schuler Law Office have the knowledge and experience to pursue full compensation for the most serious injuries.

Major causes of head-on collisions in Kentucky

There are three basic scenarios for head-on collisions:

  • Drifting — A vehicle drifts into oncoming traffic because there is no protective median dividing opposing lanes. Drifting can occur because of driver fatigue, intoxication, distraction, or poor visibility. Kentucky has several stretches of highway where only a double yellow line separates lanes of opposing traffic. Highway 60, the Dixie Highway, is so notorious for head-on collisions that it’s become known as the Dixie Die-Way. Poplar Level Road is another dangerous route with an infamous reputation in Jefferson County, as is Interstate 264.
  • Improper passing — An overly aggressive driver veers into the opposing lane to pass another vehicle. Head-on collisions occur when the passing driver did not have sufficient visibility to see approaching traffic or mistimed the maneuver.
  • Wrong-way entry — The very worst types of head-on collisions occur when a vehicle enters a freeway via an off-ramp and proceeds against traffic. At freeway speeds, the collision is almost always fatal. Often, the driver making the wrong-way entry is discovered to have been heavily intoxicated. Wrong-way entry is also possible on one-way surface streets when lighting and signage are poor.

Liability for these crashes generally lies with the driver who drifted or drove against traffic, but in some cases, evidence shows that a roadway was so poorly designed or maintained that a reasonably careful driver could have made the same mistake. In such cases, the government entity responsible for the roadway might be held liable as well.

Common injuries sustained in head-on collisions in Kentucky

Nonfatal injuries from head-on auto accidents are often severe, requiring extensive treatment and lengthy rehab. Many effects are often permanent. Common injuries include:

  • Airbag injuries, such as abrasions, contusions, facial fractures, and blunt force trauma
  • Concussion and traumatic brain injury
  • Whiplash, torn neck ligaments, and displaced discs
  • Spinal trauma resulting in paralysis
  • Broken ribs
  • Internal organ trauma
  • Badly fractured legs and feet

If you are lucky enough to survive a head-on collision, you may suffer the effects of your injuries for a long time to come. While you attempt to recover and reclaim your life, let the Schuler Law Office fight for the full compensation you deserve.

  • "Hi David, I received your voice mail earlier and I cannot explain the relief/joy I felt. I know it may come as a surprise but I felt more excitement from that voice mail than the day we settled. I was expecting the settlement but I was not expecting to hear the news you left on my voice mail. I cannot express in words how thankful I am that you have taken care of this for me. . . Truly I thank you from the bottom of my heart. With much gratitude,"  -H.G.

  • "David, I cannot thank you enough for all that you have done for me. You have impacted my life more than you know, much more than the settlement. • "Mr. Schuler, After dealing with the previous two attorneys I had, I honestly had little faith in any of the attorneys I talked to. I thought there was no way I was going to get out of the trouble I was in and I thought no one really cared. I thought all attorneys were out to make money and cared little for their clients. You proved me wrong. Your actions backed your words and I was amazed at the outcome of my case. Not only will I be able to keep my current job, but I will also be able to resume a normal life. I can now get back to focusing on my life with my family. And because of your persistence with my case, I can continue coaching my kid’s basketball teams and attending their field trips. I took these things for granted before but now I truly appreciate what I have. I owe all of this to you. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for everything you have done for my family and me. Your thorough work and dedication towards my case gave me new hope that there are honest people out there, and not every attorney is out to make money only. I also appreciate the genuine concern you showed towards my case and how the outcome not only could affect my job, but my life also. Without your help, I fear to think what the outcome of my case would have been. The deal you worked out with the prosecutor has given me a chance to resume a normal life, and for that, I cannot thank you enough. Sincerely,"  -R.B.

  • "Dear David, I wanted to thank you for all your help in this matter. I liked the way you handled things. It instilled a sense of confidence and security in me. I appreciated the respect you showed for me and my situation. Most importantly, I appreciated your kindness and compassion. You restored my faith in the law. You restored by faith in people. Thank you, David. Sincerely,"  -B.L.

  • "Dear Mr. Schuler, I wanted to express my gratitude to you for helping my husband…get out of jail. This is a horrifying experience not only for me but for my kids as well. I hope this will never happen again. But I wanted to thank you for being there for me and calling me and getting me updates. May God bless you. Sincerely,"  -G.H.
